Frequently Asked Questions

General Product & Benefits

What is tallow?

Tallow is rendered animal fat, typically sourced from the suet (kidney fat) of beef

Why is it good for skin?

It is rich in vitamins A, D, E, and K and contains fatty acids like conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) that support the skin barrier and provide anti-inflammatory benefits.

Is it "bio-identical"?

tallow's fatty acid profile closely mimics human sebum (skin oil), allowing it to absorb more effectively than some plant-based oils.

Does it smell like beef?

High-quality, well-rendered tallow should have a neutral or mild scent. Some products are lightly scented with essential oils to mask any faint natural odor.

Skin Type & Usage

Will it clog my pores?

Tallow is non-comedogenic (rating of 2 on a 0–5 scale).

Can I use it on my face?

Yes, it is widely used as a facial moisturizer, particularly for dry, sensitive, or mature skin.

How much should I use?

Because it is concentrated and water-free, a very small "pea-sized" amount is typically sufficient for the entire face.

Is it safe for babies?

Most tallow products are considered gentle enough for babies and are often used for diaper rash or eczema.

Sourcing & Sustainability

Why choose grass-fed tallow?

Grass-fed and grass-finished tallow is preferred because it typically contains higher levels of vitamins and beneficial omega-3 fatty acids compared to grain-fed versions.

Is it sustainable?

Tallow is considered an eco-friendly choice by many because it repurposes a byproduct of the meat industry that might otherwise go to waste.

Storage & Shelf Life

How long does it last?

Tallow is naturally shelf-stable and usually lasts 6 to 12 months. Using clean, dry hands helps prevent introducing bacteria that could cause spoilage.

Does it need refrigeration?

While not strictly necessary if kept in a cool, dry place, refrigeration can extend its shelf life to a year or more.

What if it melts or gets grainy?

Tallow has a low melting point (around 95°F). If it melts, it can be solidified in the fridge to restore its texture, though whipped versions may lose their fluffiness.
